Ah Ying, uma jovem vendedora de peixe em Hong Kong, vive uma vida monótona e uma relação amorosa em crise. A sua vida começa a mudar quando um dia descobre um centro cultural local, onde começa a frequentar aulas de representação. É aí que conhece o professor Zhang Songbai, com o qual desenvolve uma forte ligação. Inspirado na vida da atriz principal, Hui So Ying, e interpretado por atores não profissionais, o filme mostra de forma realista a vida contemporânea de Hong Kong (dos anos 80) e a jornada de Ah Ying no caminho da superação da vergonha das suas origens humildes e da revelação do seu talento.

該片講述了一個年輕的賣魚女阿瑩面對單調的生活，正視現實與理想、愛情與友情、家庭與工作，克服障礙的故事。
香港一個平民區內，賣魚女阿瑩（許素瑩飾）幫着父母在街市上擺魚檔，雖有兄弟姐妹數人，但只有她在此做事，生活單調忙碌，再加上愛情破裂，阿瑩一度絕望了，但她並沒有沉淪，依然嚮往不庸俗的生活。一天，她在街上看到了一家. “電影文化中心” 招募工讀生的廣告，她參加了招考，開始了學習表演藝術的新生活。在中心裏，她接觸到了教員張松柏（王正方飾），他們互相交流自己的生活經歷，阿瑩對這位患腿疾的老師產生了微妙的感情。張松柏的劇本被電影公司以沒有商業價值的理由而拒絕，他決定去美國治腿，臨行前，他給學員安排了一場話劇《將軍族》，在張松柏的啓發誘導下，阿瑩克服了對自己出身及學歷的自卑，在這場演出中充分發揮了她的表演才華，不久，她又獲得了電視台第二次面試的機會。
Ah Ying, a young fishmonger in Hong Kong, leads a monotonous life and struggles with a failing relationship. Her world begins to shift when she discovers a local film centre, where she enrolls in classes and meets Professor Zhang Songbai, forging a powerful connection with him. Inspired by the real life of lead actress Hui So Ying and performed by non-professional actors, the film offers a vivid, realistic portrait of contemporary Hong Kong, following Ah Ying’s journey as she confronts the shame of her humble origins and discovers her true talent.
